Why Massachusetts Center for Addiction

Real Virtual Care — Without Compromising Clinical Quality

Our virtual IOP and PHP programs deliver the same evidence-based therapies, group structure, and clinical oversight as our in-person programs in Quincy. Real face-to-face video sessions with MA-licensed clinicians — not a national app with rotating therapists.

Virtual IOP and PHP cohorts running morning, afternoon, and evening — pick a schedule that fits work, school, or family commitments.

Massachusetts-Licensed Clinicians

LADCs, LMHCs, LICSWs, and psychiatric providers — all credentialed in Massachusetts, all in-house. Not an out-of-state network of contractors.

What We Treat Virtually

Virtual Treatment for Addiction, Mental Health & Dual Diagnosis

Our virtual IOP and PHP programs treat adults across Massachusetts struggling with substance use disorders, primary mental health conditions, or both at once. One clinical team, one integrated treatment plan, delivered through secure video.

Alcohol Use Disorder

Outpatient alcohol rehab for daily drinking, binge drinking, and alcohol dependence — including MAT options where appropriate.

Opioid Use Disorder

Outpatient drug rehab for heroin, fentanyl, and opioid dependence — with FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment (MAT) options where clinically appropriate.

Prescription Drug Misuse

Benzodiazepines, stimulants, sleep medications, and other prescription drug dependence — outpatient rehab with medical oversight.

Stimulant Use Disorder

Cocaine and stimulant dependence — outpatient treatment with evidence-based behavioral therapies.

Polysubstance Use

Multiple substances at once is the norm, not the exception. Our outpatient rehab treats the full picture, not just the primary substance.

Dual Diagnosis (Co-Occurring)

Substance use plus depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, or other mental health conditions — integrated outpatient treatment, one clinical team.

Frequently Asked Questions

What People Want to Know About Virtual IOP & PHP

What’s the difference between virtual IOP and virtual PHP?

Both are virtual outpatient programs — the difference is intensity. Virtual PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is the most intensive: typically 5 days per week, 6 hours per day. It’s designed for clients who need hospital-level structure but don’t require an inpatient stay.

Virtual IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is less time-intensive: typically 3 days per week, 3 hours per session — making it a better fit if you’re working, parenting, or in school. The clinical content is similar; the difference is the dose.

Your clinical assessment will recommend which level is right for you. Many clients start in virtual PHP and step down to virtual IOP as they stabilize.

Is virtual IOP as effective as in-person?

Research on virtual intensive outpatient programs consistently shows comparable outcomes to in-person care for most mental health conditions and substance use disorders. The therapeutic alliance and evidence-based modalities translate well to a virtual format.

What matters most is engagement: showing up consistently, doing the work between sessions, and building real connection with your clinical team. Some clients actually engage more deeply in a virtual setting because they’re in a familiar, comfortable environment.

Do I need to live in Massachusetts to enroll?

Yes — to enroll in our virtual IOP and PHP programs, you generally need to be located in Massachusetts during your treatment sessions. Our clinicians are licensed to practice in Massachusetts, so the program is designed for MA residents.

If you’re not sure whether your location qualifies, call us — we’ll clarify on the same call.

What technology do I need?

You need a device with a camera and microphone — a laptop, tablet, or smartphone all work — plus a reliable internet connection. Our HIPAA-compliant video platform runs in your browser, so there’s no special software to install.

You’ll also need a private, quiet space where you can engage with sessions without interruption. Most clients use a home office, bedroom, or living room.

Will my insurance cover virtual treatment?

Most major insurance plans now cover virtual IOP and virtual PHP at the same level as in-person care, thanks to mental health parity laws and post-pandemic telehealth coverage expansion. We’re in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Harvard Pilgrim, TRICARE, Beacon Health Options, Priority Health, Tufts Health Plan, and other major Massachusetts and national carriers.

Call us or submit a verification form — we’ll confirm your specific coverage and out-of-pocket costs, often within an hour.

Can I keep working or going to school during virtual IOP?

Yes — that’s the core reason virtual IOP exists. Our virtual IOP groups run day and nighttime so you can choose a schedule that fits around work, school, and family commitments. Many employers and schools accommodate treatment schedules under FMLA or similar policies.

Virtual PHP is more time-intensive (5 days × 6 hours), so most clients in PHP take FMLA-style leave or reduced hours. Your admissions counselor can help you understand what protections apply.

Do you offer MAT through the virtual program?

Yes. FDA-approved medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is available for clients with opioid and alcohol use disorders, coordinated by our medical providers through telehealth visits. Specific medication options are determined clinically based on your history and goals.

MAT isn’t required — we tailor your treatment plan to your clinical needs.

How quickly can I start?

For most virtual IOP clients, between calling us and starting your first session is 24-48 hours. Virtual clinical assessments can often happen same-day when scheduled in advance.

What if I want in-person treatment later?

We operate a full outpatient facility at 1515 Hancock Street, Suite 300, Quincy, MA 02169 — so if in-person treatment fits better, you can transition with the same clinical team. Many clients also blend formats: virtual group sessions plus occasional in-person individual sessions.

Treatment that fits your life — from anywhere in MA.

You shouldn’t have to put work, family, or school on pause to get the help you need. Virtual IOP and PHP deliver the same evidence-based care, the same MA-licensed team, from wherever you are.

Call us, or fill out the form. Our admissions team is available 24/7 to verify your insurance and help you figure out what fits your situation. No commitment, no judgment.
