The Massachusetts Center for Addiction in Quincy, MA, commits to providing the highest level of care in treating alcoholism and drug addiction. We believe in a comprehensive, holistic approach to addiction treatment that is tailored to the individual. We offer a range of effective treatment options, including therapy built around the widely recognized 12 Step Program.

Understanding the 12 Step Program

The 12 Step Program has been in use for nearly a hundred years. Originally outlined as a plan for overcoming alcohol, the 12 Step Program was an integral part of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous AA. The 12 Step Program, at its beginning, emphasized a connection with a higher power in overcoming addiction.

The spiritual aspect of the 12 Step Program remains a core element today. However, it now embraces higher powers from various religious and spiritual beliefs. This inclusivity allows the program to serve as a foundational model for overcoming different kinds of addiction. It’s worth mentioning that you don’t have to be spiritual or religious to gain benefits from the 12 Steps. Yet, being open to spiritual discussions can enhance your experience.

The 12 steps include:

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Each of the twelve steps aims to guide individuals toward sobriety. This journey involves several key actions: letting go, making amends, and understanding that addiction is a sign of deeper issues. Participants are urged to deeply reflect on their lives. They should recognize the harm caused, get to the root of their issues, and then rebuild their lives on a solid, healthy foundation.

How We Incorporate 12 Steps Into Our Program

At the Massachusetts Center for Addiction, we provide tailored addiction treatment plans. We understand that everyone’s journey to us is unique. We know there’s no universal solution to addiction recovery. That’s why it’s important for us to collaborate closely with each person. Together, we discover the strategies that best support their path to recovery.

The 12 Step program is a part of our group therapy. It is a method with a proven track record of success. This approach encourages individuals to explore their purpose, spirituality, and future. It supports them as they work to overcome addiction.

The Massachusetts Center for Addiction can use the 12-Step program to complement other therapies it offers.

The Effectiveness of 12 Step Programs

Are 12 step programs effective? We frequently get this question. Research on the effectiveness of the program is a little scattered, with some sources citing a relatively low success rate and others claiming enormous success. The truth is somewhere in the middle, and it isn’t a number that can be found on a statistical model; rather, it is in the person themselves.

The success of addiction treatment hinges on the individual’s commitment. It also requires recognizing that recovery from addiction is not a straight path. Relapse is not a failure. Instead, it’s a chance to begin anew and gain deeper self-understanding. Success statistics that look at relapse rates are misleading in this regard.

At Massachusetts Center for Addiction, our 12 Steps facilitators are experienced and passionate about helping others achieve sobriety. A partnership like this starts you out on the right foot for success.

Benefits of 12 Step Programs

One reason that this model of recovery has sustained for so long is the benefit of 12 Step programs, which apply to meetings for both alcoholism and drug addiction. Each person gains personal benefits and support through the 12 Step program, with some of the main benefits including:

  • Supportive community
  • Structured recovery process
  • Spiritual growth

  • Meetings are often tailored to specific types of addiction
