What It Means to Have Bipolar Disorder

There are many ways to describe living with bipolar disorder. Feeling like you’re constantly on an emotional rollercoaster, experiencing isolation, and swinging from surreal euphoria to deep depression are just a few ways patients have described living with bipolar disorder. The millions of people living with bipolar disorder often feel helpless with no control over their own lives.

At its core, bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme mood changes. These are referred to as episodes. They can swing drastically from periods of emotional highs and extreme energy, known as mania, to depressive lows that are heavy with sadness and hopelessness.

For those on the outside, bipolar disorder can be difficult to understand. At Massachusetts Center for Addiction, our bipolar disorder treatment center offers therapy and counseling services for both the individual and those who care about them. Family therapy and educational opportunities help to build the strong support network that someone living with bipolar disorder needs.

Types of Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar I Vs Bipolar II

One of the first steps toward understanding bipolar disorder is learning about the different types of the condition. Not everyone with bipolar disorder experiences symptoms in the same way. When undergoing a psychiatric evaluation for bipolar disorder, our clinical therapists will assess whether an individual should be diagnosed with Bipolar I or Bipolar II.

Bipolar I

Those with Bipolar I have manic episodes that last at least seven days. They may also experience such severe symptoms of mania that hospitalization or inpatient bipolar treatment is needed.

Mania is characterized by extremely elevated mood, euphoria, increased activity, mood swings, and agitation, among other symptoms. While shifts between mania and depression are symptoms of bipolar disorder, those with Bipolar I may not experience a major depressive episode.

Our bipolar treatment program at Massachusetts Center for Addiction is designed to treat the symptoms of Bipolar I. However, if you’re experiencing hallucinations, delusions, dangerous impulsivity, or suicidal thoughts, it’s important to seek treatment immediately at your nearest medical center or mental health treatment facility.

Bipolar II

In contrast to Bipolar I, those with Bipolar II don’t typically experience mania severe enough to require hospitalization. Instead, the focus is on minimizing the effects of major depressive episodes. With Bipolar II, depressive episodes last at least two weeks. Diagnosis requires at least one episode of mania as well.

There isn’t one type of bipolar disorder that is more severe or serious than the other. At the Massachusetts Center for Addiction, we approach treatment for each type of bipolar disorder with the same level of commitment, compassion, and expertise.

Comprehensive Rehab for Bipolar Disorder

At the Massachusetts Center for Addiction, we value an evidence-based approach that integrates holistic therapies to address the full impact of bipolar disorder. This includes the psychological, emotional, and physical impacts of living with bipolar disorder.

We offer a full continuum of mental health care for bipolar disorder. This includes intensive therapy programs, like partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient therapy. As progress toward bipolar management is made, we adapt the treatment program to meet you where you are. This may include less frequent but equally intensive therapy or continual support for bipolar management maintenance.

Here is a brief overview of our comprehensive approach to rehab therapy for bipolar disorder.

Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

This is the first step to developing an individualized treatment program for bipolar disorder. Our clinical professionals will talk with you, learning more about your mental health history, symptoms, and the impact on your life.

Individual Therapy

Psychotherapy is usually the first line of bipolar disorder treatment. We offer evidence-based individual therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and internal family systems (IFS).

Group Therapy

We believe it’s important to acknowledge the value of group therapy in treating mental health conditions like bipolar disorder. Group therapy can provide an opportunity to share and learn from each other. Becoming part of a supportive community of peers can help the individual feel less isolated and more empowered in their healing journey.

Medication Management

Medications are sometimes used to treat the symptoms of bipolar disorder. The type of medication depends highly on the individual symptoms and type of bipolar disorder. Antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers are the most commonly prescribed medications for bipolar disorder.

Holistic Therapies

Treatments such as mindfulness, yoga, art therapy, and life skill-building opportunities are important elements of bipolar treatment. Holistic therapies can help relieve stress, improve emotional regulation, and rebuild a sense of self-empowerment.
