Understanding Boston’s Addiction Crisis

Boston and Suffolk County have been at the center of Massachusetts’ opioid epidemic for over a decade. While there is encouraging progress — opioid overdose deaths in Boston dropped 38% in 2024, reaching the lowest level since 2015 — the crisis is far from over.

Key statistics for Boston residents seeking drug rehab:

  • Fentanyl dominates the drug supply: The synthetic opioid was present in approximately 92% of fatal opioid overdoses statewide when toxicology was available.
  • Xylazine is a growing threat: The veterinary sedative was found in 34% of drug supply samples tested in 2024 and in 16% of opioid overdose deaths.
  • Cocaine complicates recovery: Cocaine was present in 56% of opioid-related deaths during 2023–2024, making polysubstance treatment essential.
  • Racial disparities persist: Black and Latinx residents make up 40% of Boston’s population but accounted for 46% of all overdose deaths in 2024.
  • South Boston carries extra risk: The neighborhood has historically had one of the highest rates of alcohol-related ER visits in the city, and substance use disorder emergency visits remain elevated across South Boston, the South End, and Mattapan.

These numbers underscore why seeking professional addiction treatment is critical. Massachusetts Center for Addiction’s clinical team has specific experience treating the polysubstance patterns that define Boston’s drug landscape.

Addiction Treatment Programs Available Near Boston

Massachusetts Center for Addiction offers a full continuum of outpatient care at our Quincy campus, plus coordination with trusted inpatient and detox partners for patients who need a higher level of care. Here are the programs available to Boston-area residents:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Boston Residents

Our partial hospitalization program provides structured, full-day treatment (typically 5–6 hours per day, 5 days per week) while allowing you to return home each evening. PHP is ideal for Boston residents who need intensive clinical support but want to maintain proximity to family, a job, or a support network.

The program includes individual addiction counseling, group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, and medication management.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Near Boston, MA

Our IOP program offers 3–4 hours of structured treatment per day, 3–5 days per week, making it one of the most accessible options for drug and alcohol rehab near Boston. IOP is designed for individuals who are stepping down from PHP or inpatient treatment, or for those whose work and family obligations require a flexible schedule. Treatment includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), relapse prevention planning, and group process sessions.

Outpatient Addiction Counseling in the Boston Area

Our standard outpatient program provides ongoing addiction counseling and support for individuals who have progressed through higher levels of care or who need low-intensity treatment from the start.

Sessions are available in-person at our Quincy location or virtually and include individual therapy, family counseling, and case management.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid and Alcohol Addiction

Given that fentanyl is present in the vast majority of opioid deaths in the Boston area, medication-assisted treatment is a critical component of recovery. MCA offers Suboxone (buprenorphine), naltrexone (Vivitrol), and other FDA-approved medications alongside counseling and behavioral therapy. MAT significantly reduces cravings, prevents relapse, and is considered the gold standard for opioid use disorder treatment.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders

Addiction rarely exists in isolation. Anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder frequently co-occur with substance use disorders, and treating one without the other dramatically increases the risk of relapse. Our dual diagnosis program addresses both conditions simultaneously with integrated treatment planning, psychiatric care, and evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT.

Drug and Alcohol Detox Near Boston

While MCA does not provide on-site medical detox, we work closely with accredited detox facilities in the greater Boston area to ensure a seamless transition into our outpatient programs.

If you or a loved one needs alcohol detox in Boston or opiate detox in the Boston area, our admissions team will coordinate placement at a partner facility and schedule your step-down into PHP, IOP, or outpatient care at MCA. Call 844-486-0671, and we will handle the logistics.

How In-Network and Out-of-Network Care Affects the Cost of Treatment

Insurance providers have negotiated agreements with certain health and addiction care providers. These agreements lower the cost of treatment, which insurance companies can then pass on to their members.

Using an in-network provider can significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles and copays, depending on your coverage type. Massachusetts Center for Addiction has in-network agreements with Aetna, BCBS, Optum, United Healthcare, Harvard Pilgrim, Cigna, and Tricare.

You aren’t required to use an in-network provider. If your preferred addiction treatment center near South Boston is out of network, you can still seek care from them. The main difference is that this choice will likely result in higher out-of-pocket costs for you.
