The idea of seeking treatment for substance abuse was incredibly daunting. I was forced to face the reality that A) I had a substance abuse problem, and B) I was unable to arrest it on my own. The moment I accepted this dilemma as my truth, I was able to start making progress. Massachusetts Center for Addiction provided an environment that promoted a change in my thinking and helped me to mature.
When I first walked through the door of MCA, I was overwhelmed and engulfed in fear of the unknown. The staff here at MCA welcomed me with open arms. I knew immediately that this place was different from other treatment centers.
All the staff members are Alcoholics and Addicts in recovery, which allows for an additional layer of connection. The curriculum is 12-step based here at MCA, granting you access to some of the brightest minds in the country on this subject matter.
On a typical day at MCA, you will arrive between 8:45 and 9:00 am. You will partake in 4 groups in a classroom-like setting that runs anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half, with an hour lunch break in the middle of the day.
The group facilitators will take you through the first few chapters of Alcoholics Anonymous where they break down what the book is describing in ways that clients can identify with. The facilitators help to guide you through the process by laying out what has and hasn’t worked for them.
They help you work through external problems (legal, marital, familial, etc..) as well as internal struggles (Fear, shame, anger, doubt, insecurity, etc..). Additionally, you will have access to one-on-one meetings with a licensed substance abuse counselor.
All this newfound self-knowledge, coupled with continuous guidance and support from the staff at Massachusetts Center for Addiction, has helped propel me toward a world in which I am happy and sober at the same time. To me, that is a miracle. Massachusetts Center for Addiction is the reason I am content with who I am at ten months sober.
